Sunderland AFC, in partnership with kit manufacturer hummel, has revealed its striking 2025-26 third kit—a bold design that celebrates the Club’s legendary nickname: The Black Cats
The shirt features a black patterned base, crafted from a mandala of 11 black cats, representing the 11 players on the pitch—accented with gunmetal grey detailing inspired by the origins of the nickname. A proud black cat emblem adorns the chest, while the rear neck features a pair of amber cat eyes, evoking memories of historic promotion battles and symbolising determination and focus for the seasons ahead.
The design also pays homage to the Club’s iconic moniker:
In 1805, a lookout at a Roker gun battery mistook a wailing black cat for a baby, or even the devil, earning the site the nickname “Black Cat Battery.” When Sunderland AFC moved to the area, the nickname naturally became part of the Club’s identity.
The 2025-26 third kit is available in adult, junior, and mini sizes, alongside a goalkeeper shirt inspired by the patterned tiles at The Bridge Hotel. Fans can also enjoy Premier League and Say No To Racism sleeve badges, with W88 featured on adult shirts and Utilita on junior kits, alongside unsponsored versions.
Produced with hummel’s ECO8 technology, each adult shirt is made using eight recycled plastic bottles, reflecting the Club’s commitment to sustainability. An accompanying range will also be available from tomorrow, including an anthem jacket, pre-match t-shirt, quarter-zip jacket, and Black Cats-themed tee and hoodie.
The kit launches at 8am on Friday 15 August, available both online and in-store, with a special event at the Stadium of Light store to celebrate the release. Visit online here.
