Our adventure in Porto kicks off with a tantalising wine tasting experience at Quievado, nestled in Vila Nova de Gaia. Across the Douro River, this charming town is famous for its port wine cellars. At Quievado, we delve into the intricate world of Portuguese wine-making, guided by experts through cellars adorned with ageing barrels. From rich tawny to vintage ports, each sip unveils layers of flavour and tradition. We conclude the day with a scenic stroll along the riverbank, savouring the sunset over Porto’s iconic skyline.
Day 2: Porto Chocolate Museum & Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau – Gaia
Indulge your sweet tooth with a visit to the Porto Chocolate Museum, a paradise for chocolate lovers. Immerse yourself in the history and craftsmanship of chocolate-making, from bean to bar, and savour delectable samples along the way.
In the afternoon, journey to Gaia to experience Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau, a culinary gem renowned for its bacalhau pastries. Bite into crispy golden shells filled with savoury codfish, accompanied by a glass of refreshing Vinho Verde.
To complete the day we ate at Asia Connection. We indulged in a diverse array of flavours, a spicy Thai curry and beef ramen. Each dish is a symphony of taste and texture, offering a unique fusion of East and West.
Day 3: A Day Trip to Braga
We went on a day trip via train to Braga and Guimarães where we discovered the rich history and cultural heritage of these charming cities as we wandered through ancient streets and visited iconic landmarks. Worth exploring the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary in Braga and the majestic Guimarães Castle, soaking in the beauty of these historic sites.
Day 4: Sightseeing in Porto
We dedicated our final day to exploring the sights and sounds of Porto. Wandering through the historic Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where colourful buildings line narrow cobblestone streets. A few memorable landmarks to note, the São Bento Railway Station, adorned with stunning azulejo tilework, and the imposing Porto Cathedral, offering panoramic views of the city.
We then strolled across the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia and ascended to the hilltop for breathtaking vistas of Porto’s skyline. Exploring the lively Bolhão Market was fun, where vendors sell fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and local delicacies.
As the day draws to a close, we unwind with a leisurely dinner at a traditional Portuguese tavern, savouring the flavours of grilled sardines, creamy bacalhau, and sweet pastéis de nata.
In conclusion, Porto offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and culinary delights, promising an unforgettable journey for every traveller.
